CISA Working With Treasury on Chinese-Linked Cyber Breach

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency is working with the Treasury Department to address a recent Chinese-linked cyberattack against Treasury, CISA said Monday. Treasury sent a Dec. 30 letter notifying the House Banking Committee of the incident. Chinese hackers gained access to a stolen key used by BeyondTrust, a cloud service provider, according to Treasury.

The hackers used the stolen key to override security, access Treasury office workstations remotely and obtain unclassified documents from those workstations, the Treasury Department said. CISA said there’s “no indication that any other federal agencies have been impacted by this incident.” CISA is working with Treasury to “understand and mitigate the impacts of the recent cybersecurity incident.”
