California Wildfires Drive Privacy Agency to Extend Rulemaking
Due to “devastating wildfires” across the state, the California Privacy Protection Agency added a hearing and extended comment deadlines by a month in its rulemaking on automated decision-making technology (ADMT) and other changes to privacy regulations, the CPPA said in a notice Friday.

The CPPA will proceed with a livestreamed hearing Tuesday from 2 to 6 p.m. PST in Sacramento. However, the agency decided to schedule a second hearing for Feb. 19, with time and location details to follow. Also, the CPPA extended comments to Feb. 19. They were originally due Tuesday. Other information in the agency’s Nov. 22 public notice remains unchanged, it said.
The state privacy agency is working on rules related to cybersecurity, risk assessments, ADMT and updating California Consumer Protection Act rules. The commission voted to commence the formal rulemaking on Nov. 8.
