Democrats cast all the nays on the bill, which is sponsored by House Majority Whip Bethany Soye and 25 other Republicans from both chambers.

The House amendment removed military IDs from a list of possibly reasonable age-verification methods. Remaining acceptable methods include state-issued IDs or driver’s licenses, bank account information, debit or credit cards or any “other method or document that reliably and accurately indicates if a user of a covered platform is a minor and prevents a minor from accessing the content of a covered platform.”

A committee last week cleared the legislation, which requires age verification to limit websites containing harmful material to users 18 and older. It’s one of many bills in the states this year proposing to require age checks (see 2501170053).
