“The legislature has considered a state privacy law in the recent past,” the spokesperson said. “Given that there is currently no comprehensive federal privacy law, more states have been enacting privacy laws.”

The spokesperson noted that North Carolina adopted Fair Information Practice Principles (FIPPs) in 2022 to support privacy within state government. “The FIPPs provide a mechanism to ensure data quality and integrity while enhancing the state’s ability to responsibly share data with educational institutions and industry throughout the state.”

The state IT department stressed the importance of protecting personal information in a news release Monday about Data Privacy Week.
