Palo Alto Networks Supports Federal Privacy Law

Palo Alto Networks supports passage of a comprehensive federal privacy law, a senior official at the cybersecurity company said Tuesday.

Speaking at an R Street Institute event, Senior Director-Public Policy & Government Affairs Sam Kaplan urged legislators to preserve sections of prior bipartisan legislation dedicated to data security. It’s ultimately a “privacy protection to be able to leverage cybersecurity to protect personal information and critical data,” he said.

House Democrats from California have proven an obstacle in congressional privacy negotiations, with many backing their own state’s privacy protections.

Sara Collins, Public Knowledge government affairs director, urged members of Congress to build on the American Privacy Rights Act, a bipartisan privacy bill negotiated in 2024 by former House Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers, D-Wash., and then-Senate Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell, R-Wash. Iterations of APRA and its predecessor, the American Data Privacy and Protection Act, were strong bipartisan bills with data minimization provisions, civil right protections, federal preemption and restrictions on private lawsuits, said Collins.
