Utah Senate Passes App Store Age-Verification Bill
The Utah Senate approved an app store age-verification bill Monday. State senators voted 24-1 to send SB-142 to the House; Sen. Heidi Balderree (R) voted no.

The Utah App Store Accountability Act by Sen. Todd Weiler (R) would require app stores to verify users’ ages and obtain parental consent for minors younger than 18. Similar bills have popped up outside Utah (see 2501210026).
The Computer & Communications Industry Association raised privacy concerns with SB-142 on Tuesday. “Legislation like this contradicts measures by both policymakers and companies to protect privacy,” CCIA State Policy Director Megan Stokes said in a statement. “At a time when the trend is to collect less personal data on users, age verification bills like this require the collection of sensitive information on all internet users to prove compliance.”
