The agency alleged in February 2024 that Avast claimed to block user data from third-party tracking, then sold that data to more than 100 third parties through its subsidiary, Jumpshot.

The agency is sending notices to more 3.5 million consumers who bought Avast antivirus software between August 2014 and January 2020.

Avast in a statement Monday noted the company resolved the matter in its February 2024 settlement with the FTC. Jumpshot was voluntarily closed in 2020, and Avast “continues to take proactive measures in concert with the settlement requirements to ensure that we safeguard our customers’ data,” the company said. “We are pleased to resolve this matter and remain committed to our mission of protecting and empowering people’s digital lives.”
