S.D. Governor Signs Anti-Porn Bill Requiring Age Verification

South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden (R) signed legislation requiring adult websites to verify users’ ages, the governor’s office said Thursday.

“As parents, we just want to protect our kids,” said Rhoden. “But technology moves so fast that it often seems impossible.”

Introduced by Sen. Jim Mehlhaff (R) and Rep. Bethany Soye (R), HB-1053 would be enforced by the attorney general. Websites would be able to verify age via ID, bank account information, credit card information or “any other method or document that reliably and accurately indicates” a user is a minor.

The American Civil Liberties Union had opposed the bill for privacy and free speech reasons (see 2502200058).
