Dutch DPA Studying Meaningful Human Intervention in Algorithmic Decision-Making
The Dutch data protection authority (DPA) Thursday launched a public consultation on ensuring meaningful human intervention in algorithmic decision-making. If organizations use only algorithms and AI for decision-making, it said, that could result in groups being excluded or discriminated against. If they want to use algorithms and AI, it said, they must comply with the General Data Protection Regulation.

Human intervention is more than symbolic, the DPA said; it must make a meaningful contribution to decision-making. That meaningful human intervention is implemented is essential, the DPA said. Organizations often have questions about this, so the authority is developing tools that enable meaningful human intervention, it added.
The DPA asked respondents to discuss factors such as technology, design and process and, for example, describe whether they've found approaches that work or have encountered bottlenecks. Comments are due April 6.
