R.I. Committee Clears Student Device Privacy Bill
The Rhode Island House Committee on Innovation, Internet and Technology cleared a bill on student computer device privacy with a unanimous 8-0 vote during a committee meeting Thursday.

The measure "is very simple and straightforward," said Rep. June Speakman (D), one of the bill sponsors. The only minor change since the hearing on the bill is an added "section that would carve out correctional facilities and prisons so the privacy that applies throughout the rest of the chapter will not apply to prisons or correctional facilities."
H-5176 prohibits school districts and educational institutions from accessing or using student location data from personal or school-given devices, with limited exceptions.
