Tweak to Texas Data Broker Law Gets Support at Senate Hearing
Nobody at a hearing Tuesday opposed forcing data brokers, when registering in Texas, to include a link to the broker's website that instructs consumers about exercising their data privacy rights under the state’s comprehensive privacy law.

Sen. Nathan Johnson (R), who previously authored a separate law requiring data brokers to register, told the Senate Business and Commerce Committee that the goal of his new bill (SB-1343) is to ensure consumers “know their rights” under the Texas privacy law “and that they are able to exercise those rights easily.” Johnson added, “Currently, it’s very difficult to exercise the rights that this legislature gave them last session.”
Texas Appleseed, a social justice nonprofit, considers SB-1343 a “very simple but meaningful step to make sure that Texans at least know ... when it comes to data brokers, what their rights are and how to exercise them.” Witnesses from the Texas Public Policy Foundation and the Texas Council on Family Violence also testified in support.
