Cruz Calls for Targeted Approach on Federal AI Legislation
Regulating AI at the federal level might require a targeted approach on specific issues, rather than a comprehensive bill, Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said Tuesday during the Free State Foundation’s annual policy conference.

The lawmaker spoke in support of his Tools to Address Known Exploitation by Immobilizing Technological Deepfakes on Websites and Networks (Take It Down) Act. The deepfake porn bill, which Cruz introduced with Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., has drawn privacy-related objections (see 2503130055).
In addition, Cruz touted his committee-passed Kids Off Social Media Act (KOSMA) (see 2502140044), another measure that has drawn privacy objections over its age-verification requirements. Introduced with Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, KOSMA would ban children younger than 13 from using social media. There’s “no reason on Earth” an eight-year-old should be using Instagram, said Cruz.
