China Announces Personal Data Protection Investigations
The Chinese government Friday announced several "special actions" for personal data protection this year. The Central Network Information Office, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Ministry of Public Security, and the General Administration of Market Supervision said they'll look into several areas of illegal collection and use of personal data in common service products, life scenarios and cyberspace.

Areas targeted are mobile apps; smart devices; illegal collection and use of face recognition in public places; offline scenarios such as automatic sales and supermarket payments where personal data is unlawfully processed; and personal information-related crimes occurring in online lending, travel ticketing, medical care and other situations.
