Consumer Reports: Many Stores Not Complying with Global Opt-Outs
Many companies may ignore opt-out requests submitted through universal opt-out mechanisms under state privacy laws, Consumer Reports and Wesleyan University researchers said in a report released Tuesday.

Reviewing the responsiveness of 40 online retailers to mechanisms like the Global Privacy Control (GPC), the researchers found that nearly one-third still served retargeted ads to consumers that had made universal opt-out requests.
“This study highlights the need for more aggressive enforcement of existing privacy laws,” said Consumer Reports. “The report also underscores that state attorneys general need more resources to enforce these laws, and that individuals harmed by privacy violations should have the right to take action through a private right of action.”
