Consumer Advocates Tweak Model State Privacy Bill

Consumer Reports and Electronic Privacy Information Center updated its model comprehensive privacy bill for states, EPIC said Thursday.

Additionally, the model is now also endorsed by Accountable Tech, Center for Democracy and Technology, Common Sense Media, Consumer Federation of America, Issue One, PIRG, Public Knowledge and Young People's Alliance, EPIC posted on Bluesky.

EPIC and Consumer Reports released the first version of the model in September (see 2501070081). The consumer privacy advocates updated the model bill “to change the knowledge standard for determining when a controller ‘knows’ a user is a minor to ‘knew or should have known, based on knowledge fairly implied under objective circumstances.’" The change was “based on actions in other states,” EPIC said.
