House Democrats Request IG Investigation of DOGE Data Handling

Inspectors general should investigate the Department of Government Efficiency for potentially violating federal privacy law by mishandling Treasury Department data, House Democrats said Thursday.

Reps. Lori Trahan, D-Mass.; Shontel Brown, D-Ohio; and Suzan DelBene, D-Wash.; sent letters to deputy inspectors general at Treasury and the Government Services Administration. They said at least one DOGE staffer may have violated the Privacy Act by sending a “spreadsheet containing an unknown amount of Americans’ personally identifiable information” to GSA officials.

“The staffer did not gain approval or encrypt the spreadsheet to protect the privacy of the GSA employees, despite receiving a briefing on cybersecurity and privacy rules just days before,” they said.
