Cruz wrote a letter to FPF CEO Jules Polonetsky asking for information about the nonprofit’s use of National Science Foundation and Department of Energy grant funding to push for certain AI regulations.

Cruz cited FPF’s work with state legislators and stakeholders, its support of President Joe Biden’s AI executive order and public comments on FCC, Department of Transportation and Federal Election Commission proceedings. He noted FPF was a “key player” in the creation of Texas’ Responsible AI Governance Act. The heavy-handed AI approach supported by FPF will drive up compliance costs and stifle innovation, he said.

FPF withdrew from its multistate AI policymaker working group efforts in February (see 2502250068). The organization didn’t immediately comment.
