The data breach occurred between Sept. 2 and Sept. 6, 2024, and unusual activity was detected on Sept. 6, according to a letter addressed to impacted individuals sent Friday. Following the discovery of unusual activity, Food for The Poor said it immediately launched an investigation, where it "conducted a review of the contents of the network to determine the type of information contained therein and to whom the information related," the letter said. "In response to this incident, we changed network passwords, notified law enforcement, and reviewed our policies and procedures."

According to the letter, the internal review finished on March 7, which is when the organization began locating contact information for those affected by the breach. Although the letter provides complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services, neither the letter nor the report contain information about what personal data may have been leaked, other than the names of the impacted individuals.
