The measure came up one yes-vote short of the 18 it needed. More senators voted yes (17) than no (11), but seven others didn’t vote and the bill failed.
In a previous Senate vote on the legislation Tuesday, the bill failed when 31 senators chose not to vote yes or no (see 2504090029). After that, lawmakers approved a motion expunging the failed vote, which paved the way for Thursday’s second attempt.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce had opposed the bill, saying it was unfair to small businesses and contained AI language that could hinder innovation (see 2503070028).
