An AP survey of 1600 companies found that more weren't sure about whether they use algorithms to process personal data or, when they use an algorithm, they don't know precisely what kind it is, the AP said. It said it will work with the business community to provide information and practical tools.
Companies don't know enough about rules and risks, and often rely on suppliers or other external parties when purchasing software that works with algorithms. That not only affects how companies purchase, it also fails to sufficiently address risks, the AP said.
The data protection authority will publish practical tools and consult with the business sector about algorithms, it said. It's also preparing a checklist for companies to deal with the rights of people for whom they make algorithmic decisions. Also on tap is a collection of best practices for creating algorithms that process personal data.
