House Commerce Committee Chairman Brett Guthrie, R-Ky., and House Commerce Subcommittee Chairman Gus Bilirakis, R-Fla., wrote the company Thursday with concerns about its “data practices and close relationship with the Chinese Communist Party.” The letter claims DeepSeek has admitted sending Americans’ personal data to the Chinese government, and according to media reports, TikTok’s parent company ByteDance.
The letter seeks information on data requests from the Chinese government and data-sharing arrangements. The committee wants to “understand the nature, scope, and severity of the risks posed by Chinese AI companies to American consumers and businesses, as well as to U.S. national and economic security,” they wrote.
South Korea's Personal Information Protection Commission on Thursday published the results of a preliminary investigation of DeepSeek (see 2504240018).
The company didn’t comment.
