Montana House Seeks Study on Disclosing Driving Records
The Montana House supported studying “the process and impacts of the release of personal information from driving records” by Montana DOJ to federal, state or local agencies. State lawmakers in the House voted 81-18 Tuesday for HJR-72, sending the resolution to the Senate.

The proposed study committee would consider “(1) why personal information is shared and whether it is necessary; (2) what personal information is shared and where that data is sent; (3) how the personal information is used by the entities that receive it; (4) how the sharing of personal information impacts individual Montanans; (5) whether personal information sharing provides a source of revenue for [Montana DOJ]; (6) how [DOJ] tracks personal information sharing, including which organizations receive a person's data; and (7) any information that can assist in understanding the process and impact of personal information sharing on the department and on individual Montanans.”
The study would be due Sept. 15, 2026.
