There's particular unease about children's privacy, social media and AI decision-making, the office noted. More people are worried about the impact of technology on their privacy and are questioning what their personal data is being used for and why, it added.

Among other things, the survey found 67% of respondents worried about children's privacy, including on social media, and 63% said they're concerned about how social media companies manage their personal information. More than 60% are concerned about governmental agencies or businesses using AI in decision-making, the office noted.

Two-thirds of respondents said protecting their personal data is a major concern. A large majority wanted more control and choice over the collection and use of information.

The high level of concern means that many New Zealanders are willing to consider acting, such as changing providers, if they think their privacy rights aren't being protected, the office said.
