James urged the legislature to pass AB-8427 by Sen. Leroy Comrie (D) and Assemblymember Micah Lasher (D). New York’s law doesn’t prohibit unfair practices, unlike consumer protection laws in 42 other states, the AG office noted. States have cited their unfair, deceptive or abusive practices (UDAP) laws in privacy and other consumer protection lawsuits.

“As the federal government steps back from protecting consumers and small businesses, New York must step up to help working families and Main Street businesses,” said James.
