Texas App Store Age-Verification Law Signed; Data Broker Bill Passed
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) on Monday signed a law requiring app stores to verify users’ ages (see 2505210015). SB-2420 mandates that app stores obtain parental consent before a minor can download an app.

Chamber of Progress, in a statement, said Texans have “seemingly traded their privacy and free speech for a false sense of security.” Courts have repeatedly struck down similar age-verification laws over free speech issues, said State and Local Government Relations Director Kouri Marshall.
Meanwhile on Tuesday, the Texas House passed SB-1343, a bill that would require data brokers when registering in Texas to include a link to their website that instructs consumers about exercising data privacy rights under the state’s comprehensive privacy law (see 2503110008). It passed the Senate with a 31-0 vote at the end of March (see 2503270009).
