Wis. City Notifies Individuals of Data Breach Involving Personal Information
The City of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, notified impacted individuals on Friday about a data breach in its network that occurred in October 2024, potentially involving their personal information.

The city government learned of an encryption event that led to a network disruption on October 31, 2024, the notification letter said. After discovering the event, the city said it "swiftly took steps to secure its digital environment," as well as asking a digital forensics and incident response firm to investigate whether any data was affected.
The firm's investigation revealed on May 14, 2025, that unauthorized actors may have accessed data -- including Social Security numbers, license plate or vehicle ID numbers, and drivers’ license numbers -- on a certain segment of the network, according to the notification letter.
The Office of the Maine Attorney General also reported the incident, as six state residents' information may have been involved. The AG site said 67, 947 individuals were impacted by the breach.
In response to the incident, the City of Sheboygan said it is "implementing additional security measures," as well as offering complimentary identity protection services to those whose Social Security information may have been leaked.
