Nevada Democrats Send Genetic Privacy Bill to Republican Governor

Nevada’s genetic privacy bill is racing toward the governor’s desk, but could face political headwinds. The state Senate voted 13-7 Thursday to pass AB-589 after the Assembly approved it 27-14 on Monday.

Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager (D) sponsored the bill, which responds to the 23andMe bankruptcy and Trump administration misinformation about people with autism, protecting the privacy of certain information and genetic material (see 2505220032).

However, both the Assembly and Senate votes were on party lines, with all Democrats voting yes and all but one Republican -- Sen. Ira Hanson -- voting no. That might be an issue since Joe Lombardo, Nevada’s governor, is a Republican who endorsed Trump.

Lombardo didn’t comment Friday.
