Texas’ failure to pass a kids’ social media ban is a “devastating” blow to child safety, Rep. Jared Patterson (R) said in a statement Thursday.

Introduced by Patterson, HB-186 passed the House 116-25 in May but failed to receive a Senate vote before this week’s deadline. The Computer & Communications Industry Association opposed the bill (see 2505150012), saying the ban “conflicts with Texas contract law and undermines teens’ rights to access information, express themselves, and participate in today’s digital economy.”

Said Patterson, “There was no bill filed this session that would have protected more kids in more ways than this one.” He added, “HB-186 failing to pass this session means I’ve failed these kids and their families. At least for now. It’s devastating, but I’m not done, not by a long shot.”
