Brazil's Data Protection Authority Seeks Feedback on Handling Biometric Data

Brazil's Data Protection Authority on Monday opened the public consultation period on biometric data as it begins an initiative to analyze whether there is a need for government intervention -- via a guide document or regulation -- on the topic.

"Biometric data, characterized as sensitive personal data by the LGPD, require rigorous treatment due to the risks they pose to the privacy and rights of data subjects," the announcement said. "The [National Data Protection Authority (ANPD)], in its role of regulating and monitoring compliance with the [General Data Protection Law (LGPD)], seeks to deepen understanding of the use of these technologies in the Brazilian scenario and in the situations highlighted in art. 3 of the Law."

Privacy expert Luis Montezuma shared a translated version of the initiative in a LinkedIn post Monday. Comments can be submitted until July 2.
