Calif. Assembly Approves Bills on AI, Kids, Government Privacy

California bills on AI, age verification and government privacy passed their originating chamber on Monday. The Assembly bills, which appropriators recently cleared (see 2505230062), will go to the Senate next.

The Assembly voted 50-16 for AB-1018, making rules for developers and deployers of automated decision systems. Members voted 59-12 for AB-1064, which would make rules around using kids' personal information for AI training. And on another bill related to AI, members voted 58-2 for AB-853, which would require large online platforms to provide provenance data, explaining the source, creation process and ownership, along with other information, of content.

Also, the Assembly voted 76-0 for AB-1043, which would require manufacturers to develop a way to have device owners enter the user’s birthdate or age, so that a digital signal about the user’s age bracket could be sent to app developers through an application programming interface.

And members voted 64-0 for legislation (AB-1337) that would require local agencies to comply with the state’s Information Practices Act and bring more types of personal information into the law’s scope.
