Vermont Governor Signs Kids Code Bill Into Law Despite 2024 Veto

Vermont will have an age-appropriate design code (AADC) law. Gov. Phil Scott (R) signed S-69, based on an Assembly bill by Rep. Monique Priestley (D), on Thursday, his office said.

The AADC bill received bipartisan support in the legislature. However, there were questions about whether Scott would sign the bill or let it become law without his signature (see 2505290036). Last year, Scott vetoed a broader privacy bill that included a proposed kids code as one piece of it.

“As we see more and more kids using technology, I believe most would agree we need to take steps to protect them in a reasonable and responsible way when they’re online," said Scott. "With ongoing lawsuits in other states, I recognize this new law will likely face a legal challenge. But I’m hopeful with the enactment of this law delayed until January 1, 2027, it will allow enough time to provide clarity and change the law if necessary.”
