Bill Updating Security Breach Law Advances in Massachusetts

A Massachusetts bill that would protect sensitive information in data breaches cleared the Joint Committee on Advanced IT, the Internet and Cybersecurity on Monday. The panel referred H-93 to the House Ways and Means Committee.

The bill would add to the state’s security breach law definitions of biometric, genetic information, medical, health insurance and specific geolocation information, and include those terms in the definition of personal information. Also, it would update the definition of a “breach of security.” Among other changes, the bill would update breach notification requirements.

The measure, by Rep. Tram Nguyen (D), was one of many privacy bills that the Advanced IT Committee considered during an April 9 hearing (see 2504090040).
