Software Trade Group Opposes UK Investigatory Demands to Access Encrypted US Data

The Software & Information Industry Association supports pressuring U.K. enforcers for demanding access to encrypted U.S. data, SIIA said Wednesday.

SIIA President Chris Mohr backed Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., who has helped lead bipartisan efforts opposing U.K. investigatory demands. “We encourage the Administration to demand that the UK change its policy on backdoor access to private U.S. data,” Mohr said in a statement.

“While we recognize and support the legitimate needs of law enforcement to take advantage of every practical and ethical tool at its disposal, weakening encryption will lead to grave consequences for cybersecurity, innovation, and privacy,” he added. “We encourage the Administration to demand that the UK change its policy on backdoor access to private U.S. data.”
