The charges against Optus arose from a September 2022 data breach that compromised the privacy of nearly 10 million people (see 2508080003). The operator could face fines of more than 21 trillion Australian dollars ($13.7 trillion).

Optus apologized again to customers and the broader community about the cyberattack, saying it's "working hard to minimize any impact" the attack may have had. It added it's continuing to invest in securing customer data, its systems and its cyberdefense capabilities.
