North Carolina Governor Aims to Accelerate AI

North Carolina will aim to upgrade its AI literacy, governance and deployment through an executive order by Gov. Josh Stein (D), his office said Tuesday. The order creates an AI council, an “AI Accelerator” and AI oversight teams within each state agency.

The council will advise the governor and support state agencies on AI strategy, policy and training, Stein’s office said. Meanwhile, the office pitched the accelerator as “a centralized hub for AI governance, research, partnership, development, implementation, and training.”

“AI has the potential to transform how we work and live, carrying with it both extraordinary opportunities and real risks,” said Stein. “Our state will be stronger if we are equipped to take on these challenges responsibly.”
