EDPB Releases Plan to Make GDPR Compliance Easier With Clarity, Support and Engagement

European regulators want to make it easier to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), especially for micro-, small- and medium-sized organizations, the European Data Protection Board said Thursday. It issued a statement about how enhanced clarity, support and engagement will help attain that goal after a high-level meeting in Helsinki July 1-2.

The statement unveils initiatives to simplify the application of the GDPR, make it more consistent, and boost cross-regulatory cooperation.

Among other actions, the board said, its members agreed to "make continuous efforts to align national EDPB guidance," and develop common practices, tools, and action-review guidelines to ensure "real-world effectiveness."

The EDPB also agreed to publish national data protection authorities' positions on priority issues to help companies understand regulatory expectations.

The board recognized the growing complexity of the digital landscape and renewed its commitment to work with non-data protection regulators on cross-sector legal and practical issues.

It also committed to more dialogue with stakeholders to identify areas where additional support and clarity are needed, and to report the main outcomes of public consultations.

"Through timely and concise guidance and ready-to-use tools, like a common data breach notification template, checklists, how-tos and FAQs, we will continue to make GDPR alignment achievable and accessible for all," said EDPB Chair Anu Talus.
