The council will exercise “the full range of the Commission’s regulatory, investigatory, and enforcement authorities to promote America’s national security and counter foreign adversaries,” with a particular focus on China, the agency said.

“These bad actors are always exploring ways to breach our networks, devices, and technology ecosystem,” said Carr. “It is more important than ever that the FCC remain vigilant and protect Americans and American companies from these threats.”

Carr laid out a three-part goal that included reducing U.S. dependence on technology from foreign adversaries, mitigation of foreign surveillance and cyberattacks and efforts to beat China on critical technologies like AI and autonomous systems, said Carr.

Commissioner Anna Gomez said in a statement she supports "any effort to bring together expertise within the FCC, in partnership with other federal agencies and international partners, to strengthen our country’s defense against evolving security risks."
